Welcome to The Linen Closet

As an architectural historian, I have an on-going love affair with houses. My first home was a tiny, stone Tudor Revival with smoky blue trim, creamy walls, and hardwood reflecting an amber-colored glow in the sun-patches on the floor. During long periods away, the house smell that collected in my absence was frankincense. The personality of that nook-and-crannied house swept me up so strongly that I wrote it love letters. That’s not a figure of speech, and it’s not an exaggeration. I wrote letters to my house about how much I loved it, and how much I appreciated the warm embrace it offered at the end of every long day.

My home became a collaborator, providing the parameters within which I expressed my personality through the arrangement, design, and color of my family’s everyday necessities. I’ve always been a thrifter who loves a good second-hand clothing store. I feel victorious every rushed Wednesday that we manage to cook a meal at home instead of eating out. But when it comes to my home, I’m a complete pushover. Show me something to make everyday life more lovely, and I’m done for.

Here’s what I think. As the world spins faster and faster, and more and more of our everyday items turn sleek and gray, hard and shiny, standardized, small and compact with universal designs, with functions that take us ever deeper into our screens, it’s easy to forget that our species isn’t evolving as fast as our tools. We need our creature comforts! Our homes store these comforts, and they act as a refuge and a means to self-expression. This is just as true today as it was centuries ago. Time has yet to change our need to spend time in our homes. And they need a little coziness—a little adornment.

At The Linen Closet, we strive to provide you with ethically sourced products linked to beautiful stories and just causes from all over the world. Each of our products is gentle to our ultimate home, the earth, and the neighbors in our villages. Our products boast at least one of the following virtues: they are made from recycled materials, are lovingly handmade, support a woman or minority owned business, are ethically manufactured, or support families or communities in need.

I started The Linen Closet as my grandest romantic gesture, to date, to the concept of Home.

Let’s love your home together.
